Your Instructor

Hello, I’m your instructor Maria Straatsma and I live in Kentwood, Michigan. I began classical piano lessons at age six, studying under Michigan Music Teacher’s Association (MMTA) certified instructors. After 10 years of study, I earned the Distinguished Artist Award scholarship from Hope College for piano performance and completed four years of collegiate-level piano lessons, accompanying, and performing.

As a teenager, I began learning improvisational piano to prepare for joining my church’s worship band. Since then, I’ve remained actively involved in worship teams, contributing as a pianist, guitarist, and vocalist.

From 2016 to 2020 I worked as a K-8 Math and Reading Interventionist, focusing on personalized support and helping students of all abilities improve their skills. Watching students grow has been the most fulfilling part of my career!

As your child’s piano teacher, I am committed to nurturing their musical growth, expanding their knowledge, and inspiring a love for music. I am also focused on improving as a teacher and musician by pursuing MTNA certification to better guide my students.
